GPA provided preliminary, contract and detail design for the M/V Alert and her sister vessels, 43-meter tanker assist/general-towing tugs servicing Alaska. Crowley Maritime Corporation’s subsidiary Vessel Management Services owns the M/V Alert, which is part of a series of three PRT Class (Prevention and Response) tugs, also including the M/V Attentive and the M/V Aware. These tugs are ABS classed and USCG inspected.


The tugs were designed and built specifically for ship-assist work, escorting, emergency response, firefighting and oil spill recovery tasks in Alaskan waters. During her initial sea trials, the M/V Alert generated a certified static bollard pull of 300,000 pounds and a free running speed of better than 16 knots. 
The propulsion consists of:

  • Two Caterpillar diesel engines Z-Drives.
  • Two 12-cylinder turbo-charged diesels
  • Twin Z-drive thrusters
  • Controllable-pitch props in nozzles. 

 

The C-P props give the tug the ability to run its engines at full speed while operating firefighting monitors and simultaneously putting out zero or limited propeller thrust by adjusting pitch on the blades. Also, the C-P prop can be adjusted to produce thrust “in reverse” with water flow coming out of the leading side of the nozzle. This offers other fine tuning maneuvering possibilities plus another option for stopping the motion of the vessel, in addition to rotating the drives 180°.
