GPA delivered the Final Design and Class Approval Package as part of a design/build contract in 2009. In 2010, GPA entered into a contract to continue working as the design agent for this project to also deliver the production engineering. The design and production phase was concluded at the end of 2011. Washington State Ferries (WSF) provided a Contract Guidance Drawing Package and detailed specifications. GPA was tasked with developing the design based on the Contract Guidance Drawing Package to meet ABS and USCG requirements, identifying discrepancies between the drawings and specifications provided by WSF, incorporating shipyard production preferences and developing a new Design Drawing Package that will be the basis for the shipyard’s construction contract.
GPA developed a global finite element model for structural analysis, and provided the FEA model to the Noise/Vibration consultant for use in a detailed vibration analysis of the hull. GPA also provided fire and smoke propagation studies to meet USCG regulations. In addition, American Disability Act (ADA) studies and vessel arrangements were developed to meet these requirements. GPA provided a total design and engineering services and support for this project.
Four Olympic Class 144 car ferries are replacing some of the oldest vessels in Washington State Ferries fleet for operation in Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands. Tow of the four vessels are already in service and the rest are well on their way to completion; the last is scheduled for delivery by Vigor Industrial in 2018.
